Art is inadvertently lurking in data representations commonly employed by scientists. The definition of art or beauty is embedded in the perspective of the viewer and also the creator. The scientist creates images that, to the differently-trained eye is a complex abstract patterns, with a rich interplay of shapes, colors and emotions. To a scientist, who is focused on the ideas represented by these spatial relationship, the beauty in these representation is perhaps not apparent. What a scientist would call a beautiful plot, is more a comment on the underlying theory it represents and not the visual features. To explore the idea of beauty in science and art, I have used graphs, photomicrographs, illustrations and schematic diagrams taken from original research articles published in scientific journals and re-purposed them as visual art.
